The Cazenovia Club
Social and Tennis
Welcome
“...Created for the
Hale Fellowship of Its Members”
Lamburtus Wolters Ledyard, 1885
Since 1866, the Cazenovia Club has gathered members on the shores of Cazenovia Lake — for tennis, long summer afternoons on the water, and evenings that range from easy and convivial to gloriously black-tie.
Our home is the original Owahgena boathouse, built in 1885 on the lake's edge — its stained glass windows, timber rafters, and upstairs dining room (the wooden tables still in use) unchanged in spirit across thirteen decades.
Our History
The Owahgena
Boathouse, 1885
Our clubhouse began as the Owahgena, built in 1885 by Wolters Ledyard as "a boathouse, where boats can be cared for, and parties of ladies and children can embark — where subscribers can read, write, enjoy the lake scenery and have parties, entertainments and illuminations."
In 1916, the Cazenovia Club acquired the building. The formal opening was April 17, 1917. A *Times* of London correspondent had already compared Cazenovia favorably to Bar Harbor, Newport, and Saratoga. The wooden tables in the upstairs dining room are still in use.
Dining
From Garden Lunches
to Black-Tie Evenings
The upstairs dining room has been the heart of the Club's social life since 1885. Its wooden tables — set for lake fêtes in Ledyard's day, for President Cleveland's visit in 1887, for a century of black-tie summers — are still in use today.
Our exceptional professional staff brings regional ingredients and classical technique to every occasion — casual post-match lunches to formal evenings under the rafters.
On the Courts
Three Courts Waiting
All Summer Long
Tennis has been played at the Club since 1888. Members of that era arrived in cutaway coats and stiff hats; today they arrive in rather less, but the spirit of a good match — and a good argument afterward — endures unchanged.
Our courts welcome players of every level, with certified pro Dave Garzia and newly available pickleball.
